The winner of the 2009 Darwin Cup thoroughbred race was the gelding Activation, trained by Michael Hickmott and ridden by Stephen Ridler.
The race was held at the Fannie Bay Racecourse on Monday, August 3, 2009.
Activation won the 2000m race in a time of 2:01.33. Trainer Michael Hickmott, who was the youngest trainer in Darwin at the time, had great confidence in the horse and noted its previous strong performances in major races like the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Turf Club chief executive, Des Friedrich, estimated a record crowd of almost 20,000 people was on hand to witness the Top End's biggest race.

Organizers for the 2007 Katherine Show said that Friday’s takings indicated the biggest single day crowd on record.
Lots of action over the three days keep the locals and surrounding areas well entertained.
Thursday saw the Judging of the Brahman Stud Cattle in the morning and the Landmark show sale at the Peter Flanagan Yards to top off a great day the annual Dinner went off with a fireworks display, with presentations of the cattle sections a great evening was had by all.
The Campdraft finals finished off the ring events for Saturday and the ever-popular Rodeo was held on Sunday.
Supreme Champion in the Cattle section was Rural College Brandy, a 20-month heifer by the locally bred sire Bunda Ben. The grand Champion Bull was an entry from the Stylo Stud at Mataranka, Stylo Nightwatch.
In the Campdraft arena, Wayne Bean from Flora Valley Station was the winner of the Open Draft while Traci Tapp and Jackie Knudsen won the Ladies and the ASH draft respectively.
An increasingly popular event is the Cross-cut saw competition.
