Ians Sale Sale Report - 16th April 2024

The first Mareeba Combined Agents Store Sale was held on Saturday 13th April, with a yarding of 1475 head. Yarding comprised mainly of local Tablelands crossbred type cattle, along with a run of good quality Brahman cattle from north of Mareeba. The quality of the yarding was very good across the board. The buyer panel was strong with some contract buyers in attendance that hadn't been attending the weekly sales yet this year. There was also very strong competition amongst local producers on some lots.

Heavy feeder steers, around 400kg, were very good quality and saw good competition from buyers. Prices got to a top of 286cents/kg, to average 253cents/kg. This up around 20cents on previous sales. In the lighter weight steers, 300-400kg weight range, prices made 308cents/kg; and steers in the 200-300kg weight range got to 316cents/kg. This is up around 10cents/kg on previous sale results.

There was strong competition on heifers, with heifers up to 300kg, getting to a top of 238cents/kg, while the 300-400kg weight category heifers, got to 242cents/kg. As an indication, the strong competition resulted in most heifer lines getting above the 180cents/kg mark.

In the cows and calves, there was a very good line of Brahman cows with Brahman X calves at foot. The calves had quite a bit of weight in them, and they made $1,200 per cow & calf unit.

In the weekly Tuesday sale, numbers were down due to the store sale on the Saturday but there was good competition on covered cows. These got out to 182cents/kg. Steers suitable to kill made 220cents/kg.
